Gardening as social action – The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society

PHS is one of the world’s oldest horticultural societies and renowned globally for its putting on of America’s premier garden show, the Philadelphia Flower Show. However it is primarily a social action organisation that mobilises gardeners to improve the lives of the citizens of the city and state: managing parks, encouraging food-growing programmes, working with ex-prisoners, taking over waste ground. A truly remarkable and inspirational organisation. President Matt Radar tells the story.
